Somalia has dismissed claims by Kenya that its case against the country on the controversial Indian ocean territory lacks legal merit after Kenya argued that the case brought by Somali before International Court of Justice (ICJ) was invalid.
Kenya’s argument before the ICJ by the country’s Attorney General was pinned on the two country’s agreement to settle the matter through negotiations and not through the court.
“The two governments must find a solution through amicable agreement, under international law. It is their obligation to do so.” Said Attorney-General Githu Muigai
Contested area is east of the Kenyan Coast about 100,000 square kilometers.
The disagreement is now in its sixth year
Somalia has asked the court to determine the precise geographical coordinates of the single maritime boundary in the Indian Ocean and the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles.
